Club Wines for the month of JANUARY 2010
|
The new year has arrived and brought with it some of the coldest weather we have seen in a
long time. With that in mind, our January Club wine selections are both wonderful Old World
wines--rich and dense, and perfect for that roast or warming stew enjoyed by the fireplace.
Both wines are produced by multigenerational winegrowers--the Saurel family in France and
the Mariano Garcia family in Spain--from old vines that impart the character of the soil and the
region to the wine. We hope you will enjoy these expressions of Old World wines while you try
to stay warm here in the New World.
Domaine Saint Damien Gigondas Les Souteyrades 2006
The 2006 Gigondas Les Souteyrades is a blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Mourvedre, and
it has outstanding potential. It's a beautiful wine with a deep ruby color, a big sweet bouquet
of crushed rocks, white flowers, and blue and red fruits intermixed with some garrigue.
Medium to full-bodied, with moderately high tannin, it clearly evidences the cooler climate
character of this vintage in Gigondas and the age of its source vines. (The Grenache vines
were planted in 1948 and the Mourvedre vines in 1977.) It is unfined and unfiltered so it might
benefit from decanting. The wine should drink nicely for 12-15 years.

Bodegas Maurodos Prima 2007
The 2007 Prima is a blend of 90% Tinta de Toro (Tempranillo) and 10% Garnacha are
sourced from 25 year-old vines and aged for 12 months in seasoned French and American
oak prior to bottling without filtration. (Again, think decanter!) With a glass-coating opaque
purple color, it reveals an expressive nose of smoke, pencil lead, tobacco, spice box, black
cherry, and blackberry. Supple and round on the palate, it has layers of ripe fruit, savory
flavors, and enough soft tannin to improve for another 3-5 years. This lengthy effort will have
a drinking window extending from 2012 to 2025.
